Secondary research

Secondary research is when you go on things like the internet when looking for research and then finding research that already exist this is a good method as it is free and easy to get hold of the disadvantages are that it could not be reliable as anyone can write something on the internet and also it could be true but it also could be outdated

Research companies like the broadcasters audience research board (barb) collect information relating to television viewing figures. They then sell this data to television broadcasters such as BBC and ITV

Qualitative Research

Qualitative research relates to information on peoples opinion different views and preferences.
It is important to media industries as they need to know why people liked something or why they did not like something.
If someone did not like something they could change it to increase there number of viewers the next time it is aired.
Examples of qualitative research in social media is things like people posting on your Facebook post or commenting on a YouTube video.
Qualitative research is all about opinions so people can know what things in media are liked and what is not this will help determinate what will be changed and what will not.

Quantitative Research

Quantitative research relates to the results of the research you have already conducted. It is the numbers and figures based of the research put in to things like charts.

Some examples of quantitative information are:
Tv ratings
Video game sales figures
Listener figures for the radio
The number of hits gained on a website
How many people read/buy magazines or newspapers
Number of views of a youtube video

Youtube is a good example of modern media as it has a lot of information on one page as you have the views and the comments from just one page you can find out all the information for the one channel.
when conducting a primary research questionnaire it is closed questions that result in quantitative information such as 50% of the people who responded to the questionnaire where male

Here is a example of quantitative research it is the viewing figures for bbc 3 it shows all the ratings down the side.

In modern social media quantitative research is used quite a lot as people always want to know how many re tweets they have or how many likes on Facebook they have as they like to know how popular they are.

Primary Research

Primary research is data where the person goes out and collects the data by themselves. Usually the person looks at secondary research to get a hint at what people like to put on things like questionnaires. It can be done in many ways such as interviews face to face or over the phone.

There are different ways of conducting primary research. You can hand out questionnaires which could take awhile and not everyone one will take notice. You can do it over the phone but people don't want to waste time on the phone talking to someone. There are focus groups where you gather a group of people from different areas and as them questions about the subject. You can have face to face interviews which would take a long time and it is hard to get people. You can observe people at things like game shops to see what they look at when they go in.

Advantages: You can get both quantitative and qualitative
You can get the information you specifically need
You can have control over the information is collected instead of just finding it in a                              book or on the internet

Disadvantages: It can be very expensive to produce things like questionnaires
It can take a very long time depending on how much information you need
Not everyone will know all the information which may be needed
Once you have got all the information you need it may be out of date
You're most likely to not get the best results

An example of primary research is going out asking people questions on such things as how much do they spend on games or difficulty. After you collect enough research from a lot of people you can find out the average amount of certain things such as pricing of a game or how long the game should last. Using primary research can be helpful as it is all up to date and you now it is reliable but it will take a long time and not everyone will want to answer questions.
